"To offer an ear to hear, a hand to help, and a heart to love others with disabilities."

sneeds.jpgAbout Our Classroom
This classroom is for children that have cognitive or physical needs. Some of these children have Autism, Down Syndrome and learning disabilities.

Integration

We believe in mainstreaming higher functioning special needs children into age appropriate classrooms whenever possible. This is usually accomplished through the use of an aide.

The goal of integrating the special needs child into a regular Sunday School classroom is two fold:
  1. Allow the special needs child the opportunity to develop peer relationships.
  2. Allow "typical" children to learn that God has created ALL of us in His image even though we are all different.

We are careful not to let the child become dependent on the aide in the classroom, but work toward independence and peer relationships.

One in every five Americans has a disability.
Of these families with a disabled person, 90% do not have a church home.
The Special Needs Ministry focuses on ministering to these and it is growing!

For Ages 5 to 12 Years Old

Core Beliefs of the Special Needs Ministry

  • That ALL people are created in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27)
  • God is sovereign, even with our disabilities. (Exodus 4:11)
  • We serve Christ by serving others. (Mathew 23:30)
  • We need to look past the disability to the person God has created. (I Corinthians 12:27)
It is Our Goal To:
  • Provide a safe, secure, loving environment adapted to the special needs of each individual.
  • Help individuals with disabilities and their families feel welcome and accepted in the body of our church.
  • Enable the parents to feel comfortable in leaving their child in the Special Needs class so that they can attend church.
  • Share Christ with people who have disabilities and introduce them to a personal relationship with God.
  • Establish this ministry to serve as a witness to the community for meeting the spiritual and social needs of those with disabilities.

  • Are motivated, excited, and enthusiastic about being with and learning from these special children.
  • Desire one-on-one relationships with children who allow us to be part of their life journeys.
  • Display high energy, creativity and patience, and who believe special needs children can love God and serve their world.
  • Long to share God's own heart and learn how to bring hope and healing to families who sometimes feel "left out" at church.

One of the major aspects of Jesus Christ's ministry on earth was His outreach to children and to people who had disabilities.

They were at the forefront of much of what happened in the Gospels. Through these individuals, God showed His great love and compassion. We are to follow our Lord's footsteps in reaching out to people who have disabilities.

We recognize the value and needs of each person regardless or their physical, mental, or emotional limitations. We strive to offer opportunities for those with disabilities and their families, so that they may rise to the potential for which God created them. Through our program, we hope to be a church where anyone can come to for acceptance, support and encouragement.

Other Activities We Offer:

  • Support Group Meetings every other month with special guests and/or topic of interest.
  • Family Fun Nights - With food, fun and fellowship.
